What We Do

The work of the Colorado Council of Churches is done, in large part, by its two Commissions (Christian Unity and Justice) and three Task Forces (Anti-Hate, Restorative Justice and Youth Ministry) of the Council.

Note: For matters relating to environmental concerns, the Colorado Council of Churches has endorsed Eco-Justice Ministries as a helpful resource for churches.

The Christian Unity Commission
Believing that God has established the unity of the Church through our relationship in Christ Jesus, the Christian Unity Commission seeks to enable the different parts of Christ's Body to give witness to and to live out that already existing unity.

Each year, the Commission organizes the Easter Sunrise Service at Red Rocks. Around ten thousand people gather in this inspirational setting to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord.

The Commission has organized three dialogues to further understanding and to build relationships. One dialogue is with the Christian Evangelical community, another is with the Christian Palestinian community and the third is with representatives of the American Jewish Committee.

There is more information on the work of the Unity Commission on an external site managed by a commission member.

The Justice Commission
We, as Christians, called by God and committed as disciples of Christ, are compelled by the Spirit of Love and Compassion to seek justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God. As members of the Body of Christ, we embrace Christ's ministry, identifying with those who suffer, confronting the evils in our human systems and societies that drive toward disintigration, and seeking to transofrm our society with the life-giving force of hte Gospel.

The Justice Commission has been instrumental in forming a new faith based, non-profit organization called Housing Justice! for the purpose of enabling the interfaith community of Colorado to address the affordable housing needs within our state. The Commission also developed an affordable housing study curriculum along with a professionally produced video on the housing needs in Colorado. This curriculum and video may be ordered by contacting the Council office.

The Commission provides our member denominations with the opportunity to advocate to the Colorado legislature concerning proposed bills which address affordable housing, criminal/restorative justice, education, environment, poverty, racism and any form of abuse.

The Anti-Hate Task Force
The Anti-Hate Task Force has organized a series of training sessions to help churches respond quickly and affirmatively when hate-based actions occur in their communities. Training sesions have been held in Greeley, Grand Junction, and other places.

The Restorative Justice Task Force
The Restorative Justice Task Force is active state-wide to help train and organize churches for participation in Restorative Justice efforts in their communities. Restorative justice provides a healing option to the retribution-based approach of the criminal justice system, and seeks to bring together victims, community members and offenders.

The Youth Ministry Task Force
Comprised of denominational staff people who have responsibility for their denomination's youth program, the Youth Ministry Task Force is committed to working ecumenically to strengthen, support and enhance youth ministry in congregational life in communities throughout Colorado.
