SMArT Education Program

A SMArT education program is not a “structure”. It is an attitude. “If I can imagine it then I can create it.” SMArT education is learning how to imagine as we learn how to create what we imagine.
Eclectic Chaos IIA marks the beginning of our “formal” effort to develop a SMArT education program using the arts as a medium for children to creatively express the interaction of their imagination with other forms of information they exchange with their world, what we like to call “the da Vinci connection.” To our delight there is nothing new here …

The SMArT program we are developing at Valley Settlement House arose out of the Summer Science Program that has been developed over the past five years as a sustainable STEM educational outreach program for underrepresented population groups. The ongoing active coordination for the Summer Science Program is under the direction of the Light and Life Laboratory in the Department of Physics & Engineering Physics at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. Since the beginning of our educational outreach in 2000 we have partnered with the Office of the New Jersey State Climatologist, Dr. David A. Robinson, Rutgers University. For the past seven+ years we have partnered with the Division of Mathematics and Physics, Essex County College under the leadership of Assistant Professor Nadezhda Lvov.
Our goal for the SMArT education program, including Eclectic Chaos, is to develop a sustainable STEM educational outreach program for underrepresented population groups that is readily replicable wherever a community wants to increase the awareness of their community’s children and youth in the satisfying opportunities that arise out of pursuing the da Vinci connection between art and science, math, and technology.
